NORTH TEXAS RECORDING ARTIST
LEYLA FENCES’ NO-HOLDS BARRED DEBUT CD RELEASE
“LIARS, CHEATS & FOOLS” MAKES LARGEST
ONLINE DISTRIBUTOR OF INDEPENDENT MUSIC’S TOP
HONKY TONK ALBUMS LIST
August
18, 2010 (Argyle, Texas) Leyla Fences’
debut album Liars,
Cheats & Fools, released July 1st, 2010
and sold exclusively at online retailers, has out-sold
hundreds of other offerings to find itself as one
of the top Honky Tonk albums at CDBaby.com, the most
popular independent music distribution site in the
world. The album presents traditional country music
fans 13 original tracks of dancing, drinking and cheating
songs with Texas flavor, modern lyrics, professional
production and sassy wit.
The music and lyrics for all 13 tracks on Liars,
Cheats & Fools were written by the Dallas-born
singer-songwriter, a “woman’s woman”
whose fresh subject matter has been said to offer
listeners a tongue-in-cheek view of male antics. The
CD was recorded at Audio Dallas in Garland, Texas
supported by professional musicians who have worked
with recording artists such as LeAnn Rimes, Jack Ingram,
Janie Fricke and Steve Holy. The CD was recorded and
mixed by Matt Kennedy and Paul Osborn, whose experience
includes recording and/or mixing more than 25 Gold
and Platinum Records including 2009 Texas Music Award
winner Jerry Audley’s Record of the Year Audley
Enough. Mastering was completed by Randy Leroy of
Final Stage Mastering in Nashville, Tennessee, whose
most recent credits include Jamey Johnson’s
upcoming double CD, “The Guitar Song”
on Universal Music Nashville, Karan Casey & John
Doyle’s “Exiles Return” on Compass
Records, and Darryl Worley’s upcoming release,
“God & Country” on Stroudavarious
Records. The artwork for the CD was completed by Grammy-nominated
graphic designer Jami Anderson of jamidesign.
With a steel guitar and fiddle on almost every song,
the CD reminds listeners of country music of times
past. “I found myself listening to today’s
mainstream country and feeling two things,”
says Leyla, “one, that it didn’t sound
like country music anymore and two, that even though
songs today might still portray everyday life, it’s
mostly only the happy, picture-perfect parts. I sure
wasn’t hearing songs that I could relate to
based on what I was living at the time so I decided
to write about those experiences – even though
they didn’t all have fairytale endings.”
On Liars, Cheats & Fools not even the
songwriter herself is immune to her say-it-like-it-is
commentary. “I’ve never heard anybody
describe my songs as sweet or romantic” Leyla
says when asked to describe her music. She hesitates
before grinning and adding “but then again,
no one’s ever called ME that either!”
Lucky Boyd of MyTexasMusic.com completed an early
review of the CD and has called the collection of
tunes “an ensemble of well-crafted, crowd-pleasing,
dance-inducing toe-tappers that will find a home in
your disc player for an extended stay…. an excellent
project from start to finish.”
When asked for her take on the CD, Kaye Wright of
Kaye G. Wright Studios in Plano, Texas says “There
are a lot of women who relate to these lyrics and,
while they might not be able to find the words to
say what they are feeling for themselves, they can
trust Leyla’s songs to say it for them.”
It appears that even though women might be Leyla’s
biggest fans, they aren’t her only fans. “Anyone
who likes good music and is partial to country is
going to enjoy this album,” says Chip Butters,
Owner & Chief Engineer, ButterSound, Seattle.
Liars, Cheats & Fools is “a real nice
mature sounding line between classic Nashville country
& modern sonic production and lyrics” says
Butters.
Leyla’s journey to this first CD has been anything
but a straight line. Although she experienced a typical
Texas upbringing north of Houston, as a middle-child
born under the sign of the bull she was happiest when
she was stirring things up so she took off from home
early and set out to explore the world’s wider
pastures. Her zigzag has taken her around the world
from foreign language and culinary studies in the
U.S. and abroad to climbing the corporate ladder in
Latin America and Europe. With her wanderlust satisfied,
her career aspirations realized and a newfound understanding
that everything she was looking for could be found
at home, Leyla returned to Texas soil where her love
for traditional country music began and where she’s
been kicking up dust and entertaining crowds at live
music venues, dance halls and opry houses ever since.
The CD release marks a huge step in the career of
the talented performing songwriter. Ms. Fences, who
currently resides in Lantana, Texas, is now preparing
to extend her tour to build upon her growing national
and international fan base.
